Optimizing Cooling Tower Efficiency with LMW Polyacrylic Acid - PAA

Cooling tower efficiency with LMW polyacrylic acid

Why LMW Polyacrylic Acid is Critical for Cooling Towers

Evaporation in cooling towers concentrates dissolved solids such as calcium carbonate and calcium sulphate. Once they exceed solubility limits, they form hard scale. LMW PAA (1,000–5,000 g/mol) prevents this in two ways:

  1. Threshold inhibition – interferes with early crystal nucleation, keeping ions in solution even when supersaturated.
  2. Crystal distortion – adsorbs onto crystals that do form, producing soft, non-adherent scale removed with blowdown.

Practical Application and Operational Advice

1. Optimal dosage

  • Calibrate dosing with the Langelier (LSI) or Ryznar (RSI) index of the circulating water.
  • Typical: 5–20 ppm active polymer; dose at the upper end for high cycles, hardness or alkalinity.
  • Feed continuously – slug dosing is generally ineffective.

2. Compatibility

Confirm compatibility with oxidising (chlorine, bromine) and non-oxidising biocides. PAA works synergistically with phosphonates and azoles; jar-test when changing formulations.

3. Monitoring

  • Cycles of concentration – compare chloride or conductivity in tower vs makeup water.
  • Approach temperature – a rising approach signals heat-exchanger fouling.
