Quick answer

What is RO Antiscalant?

RO antiscalant is a chemical dosed into reverse osmosis feedwater at 2–5 ppm to stop carbonate, sulphate, silica and fluoride scale forming on membranes. ZEELCHEM™ 9003 is compatible with TFC polyamide membranes and sold at ₹135/kg in 50 and 60 kg carboys.

About RO Antiscalant

ZEELCHEM™ 9003 is an organophosphonate / polymer blend that works by threshold inhibition, crystal modification and dispersion, all at very low (sub-stoichiometric) doses.

It covers carbonate, sulphate, fluoride, phosphate and silica scale and keeps iron and metal oxides dispersed, so they leave in the reject stream.

Key benefits

  • Longer membrane life
  • Higher system recovery
  • Fewer CIP cycles and less downtime
  • Stable flux and pressure
  • Better salt rejection
  • Replaces hazardous acid dosing

Scales and foulants controlled

  • Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃)
  • Calcium sulphate (CaSO₄)
  • Barium sulphate (BaSO₄)
  • Strontium sulphate (SrSO₄)
  • Calcium fluoride (CaF₂)
  • Calcium phosphate
  • Silica (SiO₂)
  • Iron and metal oxides (dispersed)

Also known as: RO antiscalant, membrane antiscalant, reverse osmosis antiscalant, RO chemical, scale inhibitor for RO

Applications of RO Antiscalant

  • Brackish water and seawater RO (BWRO / SWRO)
  • Industrial process and cooling RO
  • ZLD and high-recovery systems
  • Power and boiler feed (DM water pre-treatment)
  • Food & beverage process water
  • Pharmaceutical and ultrapure water pre-treatment

Dosage and how to use

  • Typical dose 2–5 ppm of feedwater; confirm with membrane projection software and feedwater analysis.
  • Inject continuously upstream of the cartridge filter and high-pressure pump via a calibrated metering pump.
  • Do not overdose. Avoid cationic coagulants/polymers and high residual iron or aluminium upstream.
  • A silica-specific grade is available for high-silica feedwater.

Safety, storage and handling

  • Handle with standard chemical PPE; refer to the SDS before use.
  • Store sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight; protect from freezing.
  • Industrial use only. For potable RO, confirm the grade's certification first.

Industrial use only. Read the current safety data sheet before handling.

Frequently asked questions

What is RO antiscalant used for?

It stops sparingly soluble salts from scaling RO membranes by holding minerals in solution.

How much RO antiscalant should I dose?

Typically 2–5 mg/L, confirmed by projection and water analysis.

Is antiscalant better than acid dosing?

Generally yes: it covers sulphate and silica scales that acid cannot, and avoids strong-acid handling.

Will it damage membranes?

Not when dosed correctly on TFC polyamide membranes. Overdosing or mixing with cationic polymers can cause fouling.

Can it be used for drinking water RO?

Only grades certified for potable use (e.g. NSF/ANSI 60). Ask us for the right grade.

What is the shelf life?

12–24 months sealed, stored cool, dry, away from sunlight and above freezing.
